MicroStrategy | Role of the Analytical Engine

As i said earlier during my initial discussions, the analytical engine has 3 main tasks as part of report execution process:

1) Assist the query engine when necessary to complete the SQL logic.

During the query stage of the report execution process, the analytical engine assists the query engine in resolving metrics , metric qualifications involving advanced functions, and custom group banding.

2) Populate Data

During the Populate & Evaluate stage of the report execution process, the analytical engine performs the following type of calculations:

– Consolidations
– Smart Metric
– Report Limit
– Subtotal
– View filter ( with OLAP services )
– Dynamic aggregation ( with OLAP services — Which will be available in metric editor –> subtotal tab )

3) Cross-tab final results for display

During the cross-tabbing stage of the report execution process, the Analytical engine performs,

– Sorting
– Pivoting
– Page By
– Thresholds
