TN245200: Metadata upgrade path considerations for different versions of MicroStrategy from 8.0.0 to 10.0.0.
SUMMARY
This technical note provides matrices containing upgrade path considerations from versions ranging from 8.0.0 to 10.0.0. Please refer to http://www.microstrategy.com/us/services-support/support/expiration for information on the current supported versions of the software. Any reference to an unsupported version is for information purposes only for those customers moving from an unsupported version to a supported version.
NOTES
- · The “from” versions are in the rows of each matrix and the “to” versions are in the columns of each matrix.
- · “–” indicates that the “from” version is greater than the “to” version. It is not possible to “downgrade” a metadata to an earlier version of MicroStrategy.
- · “×1” indicates that this upgrade requires an intermediate step. This version can be any version between 8.1.0 and 9.0.0.
- · “×2” indicates that this upgrade requires an intermediate step. The only version supported for this intermediate step is 9.0.0.
- · “✓” indicates that the “from” version can be directly upgraded to the “to” version.
- · “✓*” indicates that the “from” version should succeed if ugpraded to the designated “to” version, however MicroStrategy has not performed this testing at the time this technical note was last revised. This is specific to the 9.5.1 release only. MicroStrategy Technical support advises backing up the metadata, upgrading directly to the “to” version, and if any issues arise, please contact MicroStrategy Technical Support with a backup of the pre-upgrade metadata for further assistance with this issue.

Good tech note for MicroStrategy Metadata Upgrade flow from older versions to latest versions.
Say for E.g.: If you would want to upgrade from MSTR 7 to MSTR 10 – then the steps is below:
- Ø Upgrade MSTR 7 to MSTR 8.0.0
- Ø Upgrade MSTR 8.0.0 to MSTR 9.0.0
- Ø Upgrade MSTR 9.0.0 to MSTR 10
Note: MSTR 7.x/8.x/9.0.x to 9.4.0 cannot be downloaded from MSTR Download site and hence, would need to get in touch with MSTR Support through Account Executive to proceed such cases.
Hope it helps for the folks who deal with upgrade of MSTR Servers!
Adding to it – the MSTR Product Expiration – which also have to be in mind while working on an upgrade to advise clients
Product Support Expiration Schedule
MicroStrategy supports each major and minor release for a minimum of three years from release. However, a major or minor release will continue to be supported until one year after its successor is made available. Additionally, MicroStrategy will support service packs for one year after its successor service pack is released. When a release is expired, all of its related service packs, hotfixes, and patches will also be expired.
